Foods That Harm — and Help — Your Teeth

What you eat has a direct impact on your oral health. Some foods actively protect your teeth, while others accelerate decay. Here's a practical guide to eating for a healthier smile.

Sugary and acidic foods are the main culprits behind tooth decay. Bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar and produce acid that erodes enamel. Sticky sweets, carbonated drinks, and fruit juices are particularly harmful because they coat teeth and linger.

Crunchy vegetables like carrots, celery, and apples act as natural toothbrushes — their texture stimulates saliva production and gently scrubs tooth surfaces. Dairy products like cheese and yogurt are rich in calcium and phosphate, which help remineralise enamel.

Water is your best friend. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day rinses away food particles and acids and helps keep your mouth healthy. Using a fluoride toothpaste twice daily is the most reliable way to get the fluoride protection your enamel needs.

It's not just what you eat — it's how often. Frequent snacking keeps your mouth in a constant state of acid attack. Try to limit snacking between meals and rinse with water when you do snack.
